Chelsea star Jorginho emerged as a surprise target for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the final weeks of the transfer window.
The north Londoners wanted to strengthen the midfield and they did it by bringing Thomas Partey from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid on deadline day.
According to Area Napoli, Mikel Arteta’s outfit ‘tried until the end of the transfer market’ to land the Blues player.
Juventus also made an effort for the Italy international before manager Maurizio Sarri was relieved from his duties in August.
In spite of the interest from Arsenal and the Turin club, the 28-year-old star wants only Chelsea, who gave him a chance to win the UEFA Europa League in 2019.
It’s stated the Brazil-born midfielder now wants to repay the trust shown by the board by ‘giving the best of himself’ to the Blues.
His current deal lasts until June 2023 and the website suggests it could be time for the ex-Napoli star to renew his contract at Stamford Bridge.
Area Napoli adds the first contact between Jorginho’s agents and the Premier League club could take place in the next few days and the Blues are exploring the possibility of extending their relationship with him beyond 2023.
Meantime, Saint-Etienne boss Claude Puel has criticised Arsenal over their treatment of ex-Verts defender William Saliba.
Speaking to L’Equipe, he said: “It was short-term [thinking], even for the kids. A superb player like William, to whom I wish the best, has not even made it to Arsenal’s Europa League squad. Where is the logic, if not financial?
“He had a great desire to join us. The club are a bit like family and friends [to him]. His adaptation would have been instant.
“This would have happened if all the conditions had met. It had to remain consistent with our finances and his contract, particularly for the management.”
