Revealed: South American striker had offer from Chelsea before Arsenal transfer

The agent of new Arsenal new signing Gabriel Jesus has revealed that direct Premier League rivals, Chelsea made a late move to hijack the North London giants’ deal for the Brazil striker.

Arsenal finalised a £45million deal with the Citizens to bring in Mikel Arteta’s No.1 transfer target, Jesus at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta had worked with the 25-year-old forward while he was Pep Guardiola’s assistant coach at the Etihad Stadium and thus knows the player well.

Brazil international forward has seemingly settled in quickly to life at the Emirates Stadium, founding back of the net twice in a pre-season friendly win over Nurnberg last week.

However, things may have turned out differently had things gone the way of  Arsenal’s London rivals Chelsea, who tried to swoop in for the forward at the last minute.

‘Chelsea were one of the teams that tried to hijack the Arsenal move,’ Jesus’ agent Marcelo Pettinati told journalist Freddie Paxton.

‘They tried very hard in the final days to get him. By that point, we’d already chosen our new project.’

One of the decisive factors in Jesus deciding to choose Arsenal over Chelsea was Arteta, who convinced the Brazilian centre-forward to join his project at the Emirates Stadium.

‘We spoke a couple of times about the club, the players, the project and the future,’ Jesus told Arsenal’s official website.

‘I believe 100 per cent in Mikel. I had a very good time with him before, he’s a very good guy and a very good coach as well.”
