Celtic and Rangers are prepared to compete for the transfer of Liverpool’s Taiwo Awoniyi, who is currently on loan at Bundesliga club Union Berlin, according to the latest reports in the media.
He has made 14 Bundesliga appearances thus far this season and has five goals and two assists to show for his 10 starts, with his side currently in UEFA Champions League contention just outside of the Top 4 as the halfway stage of the campaign approaches.
The 23-year-old attacker’s form has caught the attention of a host of clubs. 90min has learned that there is PL interest, although it is Rangers and Celtic who are leading the chase.
Awoniyi joined the Anfield outfit back in 2015, although failure to secure a work permit for the Nigerian ace has meant he has never made an appearance for Liverpool.
Instead, the payer has spent the last five-and-a-half years on loan at various teams in continental Europe and Union Berlin are his sixth different club.
“It saddens my heart that it’s been difficult to get a work permit,” Awoniyi lamented in 2019.
But in spite of never having the chance to utilise Taiwo themselves, Liverpool are now considering a sale as the club could pocket more than £5 million for a player they paid a relatively nominal sum for.
With Celtic, Rangers and a few PL outfits keeping an eye on things, his regular playing time in the Bundesliga this campaign could help secure the work permit that has previously alluded him.
