Serie A versatile midfielder turned down move to Chelsea in January

Serie A club Cagliari reportedly accepted Chelsea £44m bid for Nicolo Barella, only Italian midfielder turned down a mid-season switch to West London.

The 21-year-old midfielder has been heavily rumoured with a move to Stamford Bridge in January as a replacement for Cesc Fabregas who finalised transfer to AS Monaco.

The Blues were desperate to get a deal over the line before last week’s deadline day and were nearly successful in doing so, however, TuttoMercatoWeb reported that the Italian midfielder wanted to remain at Cagliari

Barella is believed to be keen on staying in his homeland despite interest from Chelsea and could be holding out for a move to one of Inter Milan or Napoli, who were also interest in securing his services.

Cagliari starlet Barella has already played 51 games in Serie A, having made his breakthrough towards the end of the 2014-15 season.

Meanwhile, Chelsea eyeing another Italian sensation Sandro Tonali who has been also rumoured with a move to the Blues direct Premier League rivals Liverpool during the January transfer window.
