Liverpool will attempt to land Manchester United target Nuno Mendes ‘in the coming days’, according to the latest reports in Portugal.
The Red Devils have been mentioned with the 17-year-old defender who was allegedly almost included as part of Bruno Fernandes’ transfer from Sporting CP to United in January.
But according to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Liverpool are set to launch a move for Mendes in the next few days to see off interest from their bitter rivals.
In spite of not yet making a senior appearance for the Lions, the left-back is a highly-rated prospect in the country.
The Anfield outfit would have to pay between €15 million – €20 million to seal his signature as Jurgen Klopp looks to reinforce his defensive variants.
United are understood to be on good terms with the talent’s agent, Miguel Pinho, which could help them seal a deal for the attacking full-back.
Mendes is out of contract in the summer of 2021 and has turned down an offer of a new two-year contract to keep him at the club.
Sporting chairman Frederico Varandes admitted last week that Nuno is one of the most talented young defenders in Europe and plenty of elite clubs are after him.
‘He’s the best Under-19 left-back in Europe. There have already been approaches from major European clubs with concrete proposals.’ Frederico told Canal 11 last week.
In other news, Real Madrid have reportedly entered the race to sign Schalke youngster and Liverpool target Rabbi Matondo.
The former Manchester City ace has supposedly emerged as a transfer target for the Reds and Manchester United following a breakthrough season in the Bundesliga.
