Unai Emery willing to sign 23-year-old Ivory Coast defender valued at £40m

According to the reports, Unai Emery is considering Ivory Coast defender Jean-Philippe Gbamin as a top Arsenal transfer target for the summer transfer window.

Arsenal have been struggling defensively this season, with the Gunners conceding more goals than any other top-eight team in the Premier League.

Club’s £35m signing Shkodran Mustafi has been in terrible form while a number of the club’s defenders have been absent for long due to injuries. Unai Emery was desperate to reinforce his defensive options in January but they only managed to sign Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez.

Arsenal head coach will sign a defender on a permanent deal this summer and hopes to bring Mainz ace Jean-Philippe Gbamin Gbamin at the Emirates Stadium.

The 23-year-old Gbamin has caught an eye of several Premier League sides and is valued at around £40mi by Mainz. That fee could pose a problem for the Gunners, who are believed to be willing to give Emery just £45m to spend during the summer transfer window.

But Mainz’s valuation may dip if Gbamin pushes for a move, with the Ivorian defender already admitting he would be interested in a summer switch.

During his interview, the Ivory Coast international said: ‘I basically feel ready for the next step and can well imagine starting a new chapter. Through my achievements, I have made clubs aware of me, where I see a good chance to go to this next stage in my sporting and personal development.

‘At the moment I give 100 per cent for Mainz and I am very satisfied with how much we have improved. What will happen after the season, we have to wait and see.’ Added the highly-demanded centre-back
