Cristiano Ronaldo has asked to depart from Manchester United this summer in a huge blow to the team.
The Portugal international finalised a dramatic return to Old Trafford last summer and ended the 2021/22 season as the club’s top finisher.
However, the Red Devils suffered a dismal campaign which culminated in their lowest ever points tally in a Premier League season and a sixth-placed finish, meaning that Erik ten Hag’s side have to play Europa League football next term.
According to The Times, the Portuguese superstar’s desire to play in the Champions League for the rest of his football career has driven his decision to ask the team if he can depart should they receive a suitable offer.
The 37-year-old forward feels he has three or four years left at the top level and wants to be competing for the top titles.
The report claims that Ronaldo no longer sees his future at Old Trafford, given the current situation the team find themselves in.
In terms of potential destinations for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner could be Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
Bayern and Chelsea have discussed a move to secure the services of Ronaldo, while the Red Devils would want the fee back they paid to secure his services of him from Serie A giants, Juventus last summer – €15m (£12.9m) plus a further €8m (£6.9m).
